How to Care for Work Uniforms: Tips to Make Them Last Longer

A quality uniform is an investment. The way you wash, dry, and store it determines whether it lasts one year or three. Here are practical tips every organisation should share with their staff.

A quality uniform is an investment. The way you wash, dry, and store it determines whether it lasts one year or three. Here are practical tips every organisation should share with their staff.

Why Uniform Maintenance Matters

Uniforms that are poorly maintained look unprofessional long before they wear out. Faded colours, misshapen collars, pilling fabric, and broken zips all undermine the appearance your uniform was designed to create. Good maintenance routines protect your investment and keep your team looking sharp every day.

Washing Guidelines

Always check the care label first. Most polyester-cotton blend uniforms can be machine washed at 40°C. Washing at higher temperatures can set creases permanently and cause colours to fade faster.

Turn the uniform inside out before washing. This protects the outer surface — particularly embroidered logos and printed designs — from abrasion inside the machine drum.

Use a mild detergent without bleach. Bleach weakens fabric fibres over time and causes white areas to yellow. For white shirts, a colour-safe whitening detergent is a better choice.

Wash dark colours separately from light ones for the first several washes. Some fabrics bleed slightly when new, and mixing colours can cause permanent staining.

Drying Tips

Air drying is always preferable to tumble drying. Machine drying generates heat and tumbling action that gradually breaks down fabric fibres, causes shrinkage, and wears out elastic waistbands faster.

If tumble drying is necessary, use a low heat setting and remove the garments while slightly damp. Hang immediately to prevent creasing.

Never dry uniforms in direct sunlight for extended periods. UV exposure bleaches colours — particularly dark navy and black — and weakens synthetic fibres.

Ironing and Pressing

Iron uniforms inside out when possible to protect the outer surface. Use the correct heat setting for the fabric blend — too hot and synthetic fibres melt or go shiny; too cool and creases do not come out.

A light spray of water or steam helps sharp creases form in trousers and shirt collars. Store ironed uniforms on hangers immediately; folding a freshly ironed uniform defeats the purpose.

Dealing with Stains

Treat stains as soon as possible — the longer a stain sits, the harder it is to remove. Blot (do not rub) liquid stains immediately with a clean cloth. For oil-based stains, a small amount of dish soap applied before washing is effective.

Never put a stained uniform in the dryer. Heat sets stains permanently. Wash the garment first, check the stain is gone, then dry.

Storage

Hang uniforms rather than folding them wherever possible. Folding creates permanent creases at fold lines over time. Store in a dry, ventilated space away from damp walls.

For seasonal storage — winter blazers stored during summer — clean the uniform thoroughly before storage. Stains that are invisible when fresh become permanent if left for months.

At Sneha Garments, we use quality fabrics and construction methods that respond well to proper care. With the right maintenance, our uniforms typically last 2 to 3 years of daily use. Ask us for fabric-specific care recommendations when you place your order.
